Guide to PSI Distinctions

A five-part visual guide to earning a PSI Distinction — the guidelines every applicant must follow, and the judging criteria that separate a successful portfolio from a near miss. Prepared by Prasad D Dalvi, Vice President, The Photographic Society of India. Click any page to view it full size.

Distinction portfolios are judged not merely on individual strong images, but on the overall standard, consistency and artistic maturity of the submission. Qualifying marks: LPSI 60% · APSI 70% · FPSI 80%.

  • Composition & visual design — strong subject placement, balanced elements, effective foreground and background, proper framing and cropping, leading lines, symmetry or patterns, and a visual flow that guides the viewer’s eye. Avoid clutter: every element should add value.
  • Technical excellence — correct exposure, sharpness where required, proper focus, good tonal range and colour balance, controlled highlights and shadows, clean backgrounds, and no noise, artifacts, halos or over-processing. Judges easily detect weak post-processing.
  • Impact & emotional appeal — instant visual attraction, emotional connection, storytelling strength, a memorable subject or moment, a powerful mood or atmosphere. The first impression matters a lot.
  • Creativity & originality — your own vision: work that differs from the commonly seen, offers a fresh perspective, innovates in concept or execution, and shows personal style. Avoid clichés unless presented uniquely.
  • Subject matter & artistic intent — purpose and meaning: a clear subject and intent, a strong theme, relevance, execution matching the idea, and consistency of style across the panel. Random unrelated images weaken the portfolio.
  • Submission strategy — select only your best and most consistent images (quality over quantity); ensure variety without losing coherence; avoid repetitive subjects; take feedback from senior photographers and study successful past panels; follow the category ethics strictly and be honest in editing; submit before the deadline.

The golden rule: a distinction portfolio should show Skill + Vision + Consistency + Individuality + Impact. A single excellent image cannot carry a weak panel — the entire portfolio must work together as a strong body of work. Remember: LPSI demonstrates competence, APSI demonstrates artistic maturity, and FPSI demonstrates mastery.
