History

The Photographic Society of India was founded in 1937 by a handful of enthusiastic artists in the field of photography — not only from the metropolis of Mumbai but from India at large — who duly constituted this organization, largely known as PSI.

PSI can proudly claim to be among the largest, most active, and best-organized photographic societies in India. Unlike any other society in the country — and perhaps elsewhere in the world — PSI continues to hold interesting, instructive, and entertaining weekly programmes every Friday, month in and month out.

At PSI, every member wholeheartedly welcomes and guides new incoming members. Senior and experienced members instill confidence and enthuse newcomers by taking a genuine interest in their work. Some of the country’s finest photographers have had their roots at PSI.

A home for photography

PSI is perhaps the only photographic society with its own spacious premises, offering members a full set of facilities:

  • Photo Art Gallery
  • Library
  • Studio and darkroom
  • Educational courses

PSI holds, conducts, and takes part in national and international exhibitions as well as its members’ exhibitions. The numerous awards adorning the Society’s showcases speak volumes of our members’ achievements. Serving the cause of photography since its inception in 1937, PSI is one of the oldest photographic societies in the country.
